☕️ The Digital Perimeter
We are the CIOs of our households. This is an operations manual for moving beyond screen time bans and configuring our homes for real-world discovery.
The Mission
My goal is simple: To build a home environment where real-world discovery is prioritized over passive scrolling.
The Context
I am a veteran IT professional with 20 years of experience securing enterprise networks. I am also a mother to three children born in the digital age. I have realized that the tools I use to protect corporate data are similar to the tools needed to protect my children’s attention spans.
Our Core Values
- Attention is Currency: I treat focus like a finite resource. If I don’t defend it, the screens will steal it.
- Intentionality over Bans: I don’t ban technology; I architect how it enters our home.
- Frictionless Living: Security shouldn't be a burden. It is a well-configured system that runs quietly in the background so parenting can take center stage.
The Method
I am building an operations manual for the modern home. I am moving beyond "screen time limits" and implementing infrastructure:
- Segmentation: Creating safe digital zones where kids can explore without danger.
- Traffic Shaping: Prioritizing educational growth over passive consumption.
- Root Level Control: Taking charge of the devices (Consoles, Tablets, IoT) before they take charge of us.
Conclusion
We are the CIOs of our households. It is time to upgrade our parenting strategy from "hoping for the best" to "configuring for success."
Technology should be a tool that supports our children's growth, not a vortex that consumes it. This blog is where I open-source my strategies to make that happen.
Welcome to the perimeter. Let’s get to work.
